Verna Felton: The Apprentice Season 3 Contestant
by Derek Grosso
Where are you located and what are you currently working on?
I still live in the Seattle area and am working as a Sr. Business Communications Manager for Microsoft Corporation. I have a very rewarding job, and am glad that I had the opportunity to do "The Apprentice," as it has made me appreciate my position and success even more. I am also in the process of writing a book called, "I Quit – Taking back control of your career and personal life."
You took yourself out of the game in season three and left the show. How does that feel for you and do you have any regrets?
I have absolutely no regrets regarding my decision to leave and I also do not regret my decision to go on the show. I have learned a huge lesson through this experience. Life is what you make of it. If you appreciate what you have, you will be in a better position to weigh other "opportunities" that come along.
How much of what we see on camera is an accurate reflection of what goes on, and how much is taken out of context based on what small segments are shown on television, specifically in your final episode walking around the Jersey Shore with your suitcase and NBC cameras in tow?
Most people don't know this, but the only thing that was going through my head as I was walking was, "Get me out of here. These people are crazy!" Mainly, I was thinking to myself that if they wouldn't get me a ride out of town, I would find my own ride. I did not want to be there. I felt as though I had left my job, my family, and life to participate in something that was not worth my time. You ask how much is real versus taken out of context, and my answer is that this is a TV show. Just because is has the word "reality" in it, does not make it so.
If you had won The Apprentice, how would that have made your life different?
As the Apprentice, I would have enjoyed the $250K salary, and opportunities that accompanied it, but would not have enjoyed the tight grip that the producers, NBC, etc. would have still had on my life… dictating where I live, what I say, etc.
Have you ever been to Long Island? Please tell us about that.
I enjoyed NY. I have had numerous opportunities to visit in the past on business trips, and look forward to my next trip there.
What is your favorite restaurant?
No favorite restaurant. I like all types of restaurants and food, including fast food.
I love Seattle and think it is a terrific place to raise a family.
Favorite TV show?
Discovery Channel: The Most Extreme
Favorite personal quote?
"May the best of your past be the worst of your future," from Long Kiss Goodnight
Anything else you would care to mention that we haven't talked about?
I actually think back on the motel task and laugh. I took this game so seriously, when I didn’t really need to.
